1. Overview
OpenHood is a vehicle-recordkeeping and educational vehicle decision-support application. It is designed to help you keep vehicle information and maintenance history, enter diagnostic trouble codes (OBD codes), describe symptoms, review possible causes, prepare a mechanic summary, and compare the details of repair quotes.
This policy explains what information you enter, where it is stored, whether any information is transmitted outside your device, and how you can manage or delete it. The data-flow descriptions below reflect the reported V1 design and must be checked against the actual Release build before publication.
2. Information handled by the app
Depending on which features you use, OpenHood may process information that you provide, including:
- Vehicle details: year, make, model, trim, nickname, mileage, vehicle identification number (VIN) if you choose to enter it, and the selected vehicle.
- Vehicle records (“car memory”): maintenance dates and mileage, service types, costs, mechanic/shop details, warranties, document titles and categories, expiration dates, receipt or registration metadata, and notes. [VERIFY whether V1 stores actual document files or only metadata.]
- Diagnostic information: manually entered OBD codes, warning-light selections, symptoms, vehicle-area selections, suspected causes displayed by the app, saved diagnostic summaries, and related notes.
- Repair estimates: service or repair descriptions, quoted amounts, parts and labor figures, shop names, comparisons, and saved quote notes.
- Personal mechanic contacts: names, phone numbers, addresses, specialties, and notes that you choose to save.
- Feedback: selected feedback categories and written comments that you choose to enter. [VERIFY whether feedback is only stored locally or is ever shared externally.]
- Application settings: onboarding completion, selected vehicle, and preferences necessary to make app features work.
Please avoid entering information that is unnecessary to use these features, particularly sensitive personal information or information about other individuals without their permission.
3. Where information is stored
The reported V1 implementation saves app records locally on your device using application-owned files, including JSON files in the app's Application Support directory. The app is intended to work without an OpenHood account or an OpenHood-operated backend service.
Before publication, verify that this remains true for the exact Release build, including all third-party software, diagnostics, feedback, and network activity. Device-level operating-system services and backups are outside OpenHood's direct control. Depending on your device settings, locally stored application data may be included in an iCloud or device backup. [VERIFY whether files are excluded from backup and how iOS data protection is configured.]
4. Whether information is transmitted or shared
Current intended V1 behavior, subject to release-build verification: OpenHood does not automatically upload your vehicle records, diagnostic entries, maintenance history, or saved quotes to an OpenHood server. The reported V1 build does not include a live repair-shop search service, advertising SDK, account service, or tracking SDK.
There may still be transfers if you deliberately use device or external functions, for example:
- Phone or directions: If you choose a telephone or directions action for a mechanic contact you entered, iOS or the chosen external app/service may receive the phone number, address, or query needed to perform that action. The destination service has its own privacy practices.
- System sharing: If you use a device Share action, the information you select is handled by the recipient app or service you choose. [VERIFY whether this is implemented.]
- Beta testing: If you install OpenHood through Apple's TestFlight, Apple separately processes certain beta-installation, testing, and crash-related information under Apple's terms and privacy notices.
- Feedback: [VERIFY: Is feedback written only to
feedback_v1.json, shared using user-initiated email, forwarded to a webhook, or sent by another channel? Replace this item with the verified behavior.]
We do not claim that the app sends no information off-device until this audit is complete. [VERIFY all outbound requests and any third-party SDK behavior before publication.]
5. How information is used
Information entered in OpenHood is used to provide the features you choose, such as displaying your garage, showing maintenance history, generating educational diagnostic explanations, preparing mechanic questions, retaining saved records, and showing manual repair-quote comparisons.
If the app later adds optional analytics, online data sources, or cloud synchronization, this policy and any applicable consent choices must be updated before those features launch.
6. Analytics, advertising, cookies, and tracking
The intended V1 configuration does not include advertising pixels, cross-app tracking, optional third-party analytics, or a web cookie banner. [VERIFY linked frameworks, third-party packages, WKWebView content, networking, and App Tracking Transparency applicability.]
If OpenHood launches a separate website or embedded web content that uses cookies or trackers, that experience may require additional disclosures and consent controls. This native-app privacy policy does not by itself serve as a cookie policy for an unrelated website.
7. Data retention and deletion
Your locally stored records generally remain on your device until you edit or delete them, use the app's Delete All OpenHood Data action (when implemented and verified), or uninstall the app, subject to iOS backup/restore behavior. [VERIFY all storage paths and deletion behavior.]
If the app includes Profile → Legal & Privacy → Your Data → Delete All OpenHood Data, it should delete the app-owned local records identified in the verified implementation. This may not erase device backups, copies you intentionally shared elsewhere, or data previously transmitted to third parties.
For privacy inquiries or requests regarding information we may hold outside your device, contact gcrisostomo@designedforhuman.com. [VERIFY whether the operator actually holds any user data and document a response process.]
8. Security
OpenHood is designed to minimize unnecessary transmission of vehicle records by storing V1 user content locally. However, no software or storage system can guarantee absolute security. [VERIFY iOS file-protection configuration, device backup settings, logging practices, and whether any secret or personal information is written into diagnostic logs.]
You are responsible for maintaining appropriate security for your device and any records you export or share.
9. Children
OpenHood is designed for people seeking information about vehicle ownership and care, rather than being directed to young children. [VERIFY the intended minimum age, jurisdictions of distribution, age rating, and any actual processing of minors' information. Counsel must approve final language.]
10. Your choices and rights
You can choose not to enter optional fields such as a VIN, mechanic contact, or notes. You may edit or delete records using available in-app tools. [VERIFY which records have working edit/delete controls.] Depending on applicable law and whether the operator actually holds personal information, you may have additional privacy rights. Contact gcrisostomo@designedforhuman.com for requests or questions.
11. Third-party services and links
OpenHood may allow you to open another application, call a number, or view an external website. Those services are not controlled by OpenHood and may have separate terms and privacy policies. [VERIFY exact external links and platform integrations.]
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if the app's functionality or data practices change. The current effective date will appear at the top of the policy. Material changes should be communicated in a manner appropriate to the change and applicable law.
