1. Scope and agreement
These Terms of Use describe important limitations and appropriate use of OpenHood, a vehicle ownership recordkeeping and educational guidance application. By using the app, you acknowledge these terms only after the final published version has been presented and made available in accordance with applicable law.
App licensing: Unless OpenHood's provider adopts a valid custom end-user license agreement, installation and use of the app through Apple's App Store is generally governed by Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement. These Terms are intended to address the OpenHood experience in addition to, and not to override, applicable App Store license terms or rights that cannot lawfully be waived. [LEGAL REVIEW: confirm intended licensing arrangement and resolve any conflict.]
2. What OpenHood provides
OpenHood V1 is designed to help you:
- Maintain vehicle profiles and locally saved records.
- Record maintenance and related documents or document metadata.
- Manually enter and review common OBD diagnostic trouble codes.
- Describe symptoms and see educational lists of possible causes.
- Prepare questions and summaries for a mechanic.
- Enter and organize repair quote details and view educational comparison information.
- Save personal mechanic contact information that you provide.
Features, coverage, and supported codes may vary by version, make, model, and information available. [VERIFY all claims against the shipped V1 build.]
3. Educational information — not a professional diagnosis
OpenHood's OBD explanations, symptom interpretations, possible causes, suggested parts to inspect, maintenance information, mechanic questions, and quote comparisons are educational decision-support information. They are not a certified vehicle inspection, diagnosis, repair instruction, or guarantee that any part is faulty.
A diagnostic trouble code may indicate a condition or affected system without identifying the exact defective component. A list of possible causes is not a confirmed diagnosis or a reliably quantified probability ranking unless specifically supported by validated evidence. Always ask a qualified automotive technician to verify the condition before authorizing or performing repairs.
4. Driving and safety
Do not rely solely on OpenHood to determine whether a vehicle is safe to drive. Vehicle problems can be dangerous and may develop or worsen without warning. The app cannot directly inspect your vehicle or continuously monitor driving conditions.
If your vehicle shows severe symptoms such as active smoke or fire, overheating, brake or steering malfunction, loss of power in traffic, a flashing check-engine light with poor running, or another immediate safety concern, safely stop using the vehicle when conditions permit and seek qualified assistance. If there is an immediate threat to life or safety, contact the appropriate local emergency services.
OpenHood is not an emergency response provider, roadside dispatch service, mechanic, or substitute for a vehicle owner's manual or manufacturer safety notices.
5. Repair quotes and price information
Any repair-price ranges or comparisons displayed by OpenHood are illustrative or educational unless based on identified, verified, current data. Actual repair costs may differ because of location, labor rates, vehicle configuration, parts, diagnostic work, warranty terms, taxes, and shop practices.
Do not treat a displayed range, confidence rating, or label such as “above typical” as proof that a shop is overcharging or that a quote is fair. Confirm the scope of work, diagnosis, itemization, parts, warranty, and final price directly with the repair provider.
[RELEASE BLOCKER: verify source, currency, regional applicability, and accuracy of any benchmark or confidence claim; adjust UI and this text accordingly.]
6. User-provided information and records
You are responsible for the accuracy and lawful use of the information you choose to enter, including VINs, mileage, maintenance history, contact details, notes, and quote information. Entering inaccurate or incomplete information can lead to irrelevant or incorrect guidance.
You should maintain your own backups or copies of records you consider important. OpenHood's intended V1 design stores data locally, so device loss, deletion, reset, or app removal could affect access to records, depending on device backup settings. [VERIFY backup, export, restore, and deletion behavior.]
Do not enter information you are not authorized to use or information that infringes another person's rights.
7. External services and personal mechanic contacts
If you add a mechanic's contact details, that information is supplied by you. OpenHood does not verify, recommend, certify, or endorse that mechanic. If the app offers a call or directions action, it may hand information to your device's phone, mapping, or other external service. External providers operate under their own terms and privacy notices.
The public V1 offering does not include live mechanic bookings, roadside dispatch, real-time shop availability, or guarantees that a provider will accept a repair.
8. Availability, updates, and beta versions
The app and its local reference content may change, and some information may be unavailable or unsupported. When used through TestFlight, OpenHood is beta software under active testing. Beta features may contain bugs, change without notice, or behave differently from the eventual public release. Avoid depending on a beta app as the sole copy of important records.
9. Intellectual property and permitted use
OpenHood's software, branding, original interface designs, and authored content are owned by or licensed to DESIGNED FOR HUMAN LLC or the relevant rights holders. Your license to use the app is subject to the applicable Apple or custom EULA described above. Third-party names, vehicle brands, icons, and other marks remain the property of their respective owners.
You may use the app for lawful personal vehicle-ownership purposes. Do not misuse it to violate applicable law or the rights of others. [LEGAL REVIEW: add any needed restrictions without conflicting with applicable EULA or mandatory rights.]
10. No purchases or refunds in current V1
The current V1 scope does not include an OpenHood subscription or in-app payment flow. Therefore, these Terms do not describe an OpenHood payment or refund program. If paid features are introduced, the provider must publish applicable purchase, renewal, cancellation, and refund terms before launch. [VERIFY V1 monetization and App Store configuration.]
11. Disclaimers and liability
OpenHood is offered to help you organize information and prepare for vehicle care decisions, but automotive safety and repair decisions can involve significant risk. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the provider does not guarantee that educational content is accurate, complete, available, or suitable for a particular vehicle or situation.
No provision in these Terms is intended to exclude statutory rights or liability that cannot legally be excluded. [COUNSEL MUST REVIEW any proposed warranty disclaimer, limitation of liability, consumer-rights wording, dispute terms, or governing-law provision. No unreviewed liability cap or jurisdiction is stated here.]
12. Privacy and data deletion
Your information and choices are described in the OpenHood Privacy Policy, which must be publicly available at [PUBLISHED PRIVACY POLICY URL] before the public app release. The in-app Your Data area should describe verified local-deletion capabilities. Contact gcrisostomo@designedforhuman.com about privacy questions or rights that may apply.
13. Changes and contact
We may revise these Terms as the app evolves. The effective date will be updated and important changes communicated as required by applicable law.

Internal release-review notes — remove before publication
- Decide whether Apple's Standard EULA will govern app licensing or whether a fully compliant custom EULA is necessary; do not imply these supplemental Terms replace Apple's EULA without making that choice.
- Review disclaimers, safety, liability, consumer protection, governing law, age restrictions, and any required dispute-resolution provisions with counsel.
- Verify actual diagnostic database coverage and the provenance/quality of ranked causes, confidence indicators, and price benchmarks.
- Validate that public V1 truly has no purchases, live emergency services, or live provider directory.
- Replace all
[ ... ]placeholders and remove this banner before publishing or showing the document as final. Confirm the final OpenHood-specific Privacy Policy and support URLs; the company homepage is not their substitute.
